Temper Tantrums, Frequent Colds

A three year old boy presented with "continuous temper tantrums", sleep disturbances, and cold-like symptoms which had persisted since three months of age. He had received recurrent antibiotics for cold, cough, and ear "infections.  His behavior grew progressively worse during his second year until mother was desperate for help. In her words "nothing works - he cries, screams, protests, and fights all the time". Punishment was never effective in controlling his angry, aggressive outbursts.

He was a fussy eater who would eat only bread, peanut butter, cookies, popsicles and he drank 3-4 glasses of milk and a similar amount of fruit juice, usually apple juice. He refused most vegetable foods.  Physical signs of food allergy included allergic shiners, flushed cheeks and ears, nose swelling and enlarged lymph nodes in his neck.

This child cleared promptly on Phase 1 of  the Alpha Nutrition Program, but required close supervision to prevent "cheating" on reactive foods (especially milk and apple juice) which produced prompt recurrence of hyperactive, angry behavior.

Screaming and Eczema

A two year old boy presented with excessive crying beginning at day 10 of his life, progressing to screaming fits in the second year. He was fed initially on a milk formula for 5 weeks - he cried incessantly, developed severe diaper rash with red, scaling skin on his cheeks and neck.

A switch to Soya formula was helpful, but symptoms returned after 5 months when mother began to introduce foods - wheat pabulum, applesauce, apple juice, and yogurt. He began to have screaming fits at the end of the first year with bursts of hyperactivity and sleep disturbances. We encountered hypersensitivity at the beginning of Alpha Nutrition and discontinued rice, peaches and pears - all triggered obvious flushing, followed by agitation and screaming fits.

Three serving of  Alpha ENF, 300-400 cal/day were introduced to provide extra nutrients and food introduction was slowed to one new food every 10 days. He remained stable and well on a simple food list (carrots, peas, sweet potato, chicken, turkey) for several months before decreasing sensitivity permitted new food introductions.

Some children remain hypersensitive for several months and must remain on a simple food list to remain well. This child suffered extremely, and behaved like a terrorist when he was fed the wrong foods. On a limited safe food list he was happy, bright, and a pleasure to be with.  His parents become anxious about limited food choices, but nutritional support with Alpha ENF can ensure optimal nutrition with normal growth and development.

Brief Note on Delayed Pattern Food Allergy

In this section we are discussing delayed food allergy, not the more obvious immediate food allergic reactions. Delayed patterns of food allergy are not so obvious and generally go unrecognized. Allergy skin tests do not show this problem nor do blood tests for antibodies  such as RAST or ELIZA.  Delayed patterns of food allergy are responsible for causing specific diseases such as asthma and eczema and also common but ill-defined illness patterns in children.  There are many ways for food problems to interfere with a child's normal functioning and to promote disease. We  assume that several problems interact in a complex manner to produce the symptoms and dysfunction that we seek to remedy.

It is always necessary, therefore, to correct nutritional problems by complete diet revision Using the Alpha Nutrition Program. A children's rescue starter pack combines this program with the book Feeding Children and a 500 Gram jar of Alpha ENF, our complete nutrition, food replacement formula.
