Everybody is interested in sex; everyone talks about it; many write
articles and books about sex. Dr. Gislason harvested the best ideas
about sex in terms of the ancient biological design of reproduction,
and in term of each person's experiences.
The book explores attraction, dating, bonding and mating. Falling
in love is described as a temporary, intense bond that brings people
together to reproduce. The emotions involved in bonding are explored.
Issues in reproductive technology and ethics are described. Mixed gender
identities are explained. Social and political issues around sex are
considered. A must read for the well informed.
The introduction begins:
"Planet Earth is a sexy place. Sex is elaborated by variations on
a common theme: let us make babies. DNA has mastered mating routines
and sex has been a great success as a method of reproduction. Sexual
reproduction requires males and females. Sex requires that males and
females relate to each other at critical times and in specific ways.
Because there are better and worse ways to combine genes, DNA has
a few basic rules about who has sex with whom. The idea of natural selection
is that gene changes are selected by reproductive success and by the
survival of offspring. Whatever the overlying costumes and complications,
humans share patterns of reproduction developed by preceding animals.
If you every wondered what your purpose in life is, the answer is easy.
Your main job is to secure enough food, safety and social stability
that you can have children who will survive to have more children. Every
other human activity is optional.
If you examine the details of individual mating and the mating habits
of local groups, you can find a host of imperfections and problems that
have been well explored in literature, movies, social policy and law.
Overall, however, human reproduction is a great success.
Women are the key to human population and they will decide to
have fewer children if they have access to education, employment and
contraception. Since females under the age of 18 have about 40
% of the earth's babies, these younger women need help to find
meaning for themselves that does not involve sex, marriage and
reproduction. Women have a deep desire to have babies and despite
women's liberation, careers and professions, women generally feel
incomplete if they forfeit the opportunity to be a mother. Men are
also interested in having babies and most are easily drawn into the
fertility mood that envelops women they fall in love with. Both
lovers experience a deep, irresistible desire to mate and procreate
(this is DNA at work). Both parents, given the right circumstances,
will bond with their own children and provide protection and
nurturing for many years.
